Johnny's Got a Boom Boom and So Do We!

HTML email (weffashion.blogspot.com)
You don’t have to have a 1940s wardrobe to achieve a retro look. Simple styling can give any outift a pin-up twist, and Irish rockabilly babe Imelda May's signature victory rolls are the perfect way to add vintage flair to your hair.

From 1940s starlets to today’s superstars, the victory roll is still as fabulous now as it ever was and the best thing is that it suits all shapes sizes!
The trend started in world war two, hence the “victory” name and although first popular with working women, the wartime style soon made its way to the Hollywood stars.
Doris Day, 1948,  photo from Marie Claire
There are plenty of step by step tutorials online and it’s easy to master the technique. I prefer pictures rather than YouTube videos so check out pinterest for a variety of guides. Once you have it do wn, you can play around with them and get creative and choose what type of victory roll suits you.
You don't want to look like you're in fancy dress.
Unless you ARE in fancy dress like Barry.
To really rock your inner rockabilly, team your victory rolls with a pencil skirt and top combo or a mid length body con dress like the one I'm wearing above from Retro in Dublin. It’s important not to look like you’re in fancy dress so remember to keep it subtle to avoid people asking you if you’re in a doo woop group.

So get out there with your victory rolls and show the world that it’s not just Johnny that’s got a boom boom!

We're all Prom Queens

HTML email (weffashion.blogspot.com)
Growing up in Ireland, the only “prom” we experienced was through Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills 90210.

With our local GAA center the nearest thing we had to the Peach Pit we left our prom queen hopes and dreams in their capable hands, that is, until now! We don’t need a tiara or a title to be crowned a prom queen, just the perfect prom dress!

Pink Bubblegum Dress, $83, Unique Vintage
The traditional style prom dress makes a real statement, and is perfect for a curvy figure whether you're more Sandy from Grease, or Dita Von Teese!  US online retailer Unique Vintage have it covered as does my Dublin favourite, Retro.
Floral Prom Dress, 150e, Retro Dublin

H by Henry Holland at Debenhams, 50.40e
This H! by Henry Holland flamingo print prom dress is fun, flirty and great value at 50 euro for a designer dress. For any smallies out there, Asos petite have a great range of prom dresses that won’t need taking up!
There are plenty of options out there for anyone a little bit plus, but watch out for cut outs on the back of the prom dress, some cut out panels will rule out wearing a bra so make sure when buying online you can see the back of your dress. Asos Curve won't do you wrong with this glitzy number!
Asos Curve, 44.95e
Remember, real life has no high school ballot box, so the results are already in â€" YOU ARE A PROM QUEEN!

Now, where is Zach Morris when you need him…..?

Will you shift my friend?

HTML email (weffashion.blogspot.com)

Ah, the question that still echos through GAA centres and bike sheds across the country.. …”will you shift my friend?” For anyone not from Ireland, “shift” is our word for kiss, and I don’t mean a peck on the cheek! You know the one that in your head, looks like this….

And in reality probably looks something like this…..!

Back in the day, you would march up to some young fella and actually ASK them if they would kiss your mate. My God, when you think of it! An emotion made up of equal amounts of mortification and excitement! Thankfully those days are gone… but at least shifting is still very much part of all of our lives. So whether you call it “shifting”, “snogging” or even “makin’ out” this bank holiday weekend, treat your lips to something fancy to make you even more “shiftable”!

Moisturise
Boots, €2.59
Cracked and dehydrated lips are not ideal for getting your shift on, so make sure to moisturise your puckers at least a few times a week. My absolute fave is Blistex Intensive Moisturiser. It has Shea butter so is perfect for daily moisture and for re hydrating any dryness which is essential if you use matte lipsticks which can dry your lips out a bit.

Shine

Marvellous Moxie from BareMinerals, â‚¬19
If you’re going “au natural” and just want the perfect shine on your lips, a light gloss is your only man. Bare minerals have a new limited edition gloss that is delish, Marvellous Moxie. It has a non sticky finish with a satin shine. Best of all it has a tingly minty taste that will leave your lips shift-tastic!

To launch the Moxie lipgloss, they even have a cute little kiss print game to see what your lip print says about you!

Colour
Revlon Just Bitten, 7.99 GBP
The age old debate, will he get lipstick all over his face?! Chances are, probably! However there are plenty of long lasting lippies on the market, which are marketed as kiss proof. Revlon Just Bitten Lip stain is one of the best for long lasting colour power that won’t rub off, plus it has a handy little balm with it so you won’t dry out. Mac Prolong wear lip cream is also worth a try.
Mac Prolong Wear Lip Cream, €22
Kiss proof or not, if you ask me, I say go for it, leave your mark ladies! K x

Some Things Are Better in Yellow....

HTML email (weffashion.blogspot.com)
Sunshine, buttercups, rubberducks, Gordon’s Dry Gin - some things are just perfect in yellow, and this Easter why not embrace the colour of the season and brighten up your wardrobe this long weekend.
Yellow even gets the Royal Approval!
Yellow is one of those colours that is perfect on all complexions. Blondes, brunettes, red-heads, it suits us all. The only thing to watch out for is to make sure your choice of yellow contrasts to your skin tone or you will look like a simpson! Those with naturally dark skin tones are lucky rubberducks, as yellow is born to suit you. For pale skin tones,  stay away from “baby yellow” as it will blend into your skin tone and wash you out, bolder yellows are for you.
Skater dress, Warehouse, £70
Jump right in with this bold yellow dress from Warehouse. It is skater style so will suit all shapes. (Attention plus-sizers Warehouse only stock to a UK16)
Shabby Apple Summer Wind Dress, $82
Remembering last week’s love of retro, this classic yellow dress is from US online retailer Shabby Apple. If in Europe, shipping from the US will hike up the price â€" but well worth it to get this fab Mad Men look.
Yellow Geo Print Shirt Dress, Littlewoods, €62
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to mix up your yellows with some print, this Coleen Rooney geo print from Littlewoods is the one for you. I have this dress and it’s lovely, get it!
BARGAIN ALERT! Skater Skirt, €16, Boohoo.com
Play it safe with just a hint of yellow, this bohoo plus skater skirt is my bargain of the week and will do you all through the summer.

So instead of spending your paycheck on Easter Eggs this weekend, treat yourself to a wearable treat and say hello to yellow!

Happy Easter!

The Wonderful World of Cos!

HTML email (weffashion.blogspot.com)
Cos is certainly the buzz word on the Dublin high street this week with the opening of its plush new store on Exchequer Street. Even though I’ve heard of Cos and visited their online store numerous times, this week was the first of my Cos purchases. So why was I so reluctant to hop on the bandwagon until now?

Be Cos Be Cos Be Cos Be Cos.......

I was one of the of the sceptical gang. With only their website to go on, Cos seems unwelcoming to plus sizers. Their expressionless models are thin and angular with not even a “smise” in sight. Tyra would NOT be impressed. As a result, this plus â€" sizer was more “soz-babes” than “Cos â€"babes”.
So as a budding “lady who launches” I was headed straight for the red carpet in Dublin’s City center for the opening of the infamous Cos Store, and what awaited me was beyond my wildest dreams, but still within my credit card limit!
The launch itself was filled with plenty of Dublin’s “scensters” but everyday girls like me were also in the mix. I was really impressed with their staff who were not only kitted out in the finest of Cos gear, but they were of all shapes and sizes, so you could really imagine yourself in the clothes.
Chi Cheng, Cos Area Manager
Cos has a range of free sized dresses and tops that are not only built for the long and lean, but perfect on curves as well. It doesn’t adhere to fashion trends but rather creates its own, so as a result its shelves are full of “key pieces” that will have a place in your wardrobe for seasons to come.
Size â€" wise, their free sized items range from XS â€" L, and even if you’re a little bit plus, try on â€" as you may find you’re only a medium. For more tailored pieces, their sizes are tight, so prepare to go a size up, it’s worth it.

On the night I purchased.....
Tank Top, €19

Asymmetrical Collar Dress, €125

Box Pleat Skirt (in yellow!), €69

Jersey Sleeved Top, €29
Elayne and Erin got their Cos on!
Maybe it was the glamorous staff, the Scandinavian style shop fittings or even the 3 + glasses of prosecco that were had.... but I have definitely drank the coolade and Cos is now a firm favourite. Treat yourself 'Cos you're worth it!

Whats Another Year... in Eurovision Fashion

HTML email (weffashion.blogspot.com)
Glitz, glamour and plenty of cheese, it’s finally Eurovision season. The weird and the wonderful graced our screens this week showcasing songs of their nations and they did not disappoint! Sure - there were key changes, big diva numbers, even a trampoline, but let’s face it, the style stakes are really where it’s at when it comes to the Eurovision Song Contest.
Who should be asking the mirror “Why Me”?” Whose dress is going out with a "Boom Bang a Bang?" While we’re “Making our Minds Up” let’s have a run down of this year’s best and worst Eurovision get ups.

Nil points

This green dress form Georgia is one of the worst from the Eurovision wardrobe. It is shapeless, a sickly colour and does nothing for lead singer Mick Hucknall. (aka Mariko).

The Tolmachevy Twins from Russia are proof that while everyone at Eurovision loves a good gimmick, wrapping your hair together just looks ridiculous.

Dix Points

Touch of the Cher about Conchita Wurst from Austria, total Diva Alert in this gold number. ten points!

Also in gold was our own Kasey Smith. Ireland failed to make the cut in the second semi final, but her Celtic collar from Irish designer Oliver Doherty Duncan, deserves a prize of its own.

Poland. Ah, Poland. I’m struggling to decide on Poland. They don't deserve any points for their blatant female objectification with their slutty butter churning, however I can’t help but award dix points for the representation of large and natural breasts… the jury is out.

Deux Points
Eurovision is usually go big or go home when it comes to fashion, but this year my favourite dress stayed on the subtle side.
Iilse Delange form the Netherland’s Commen Linnets was Duffy-esque in this simple white lace number. No hair tricks, no rip off skirt, just a pretty girl singing a pretty song in a pretty dress. Perfect.

So we’ve seen “All Kinds of Everything” in "What’s Another Year” of Eurovision fashion. Check out tonight’s Eurovision final to “Shine a Light” on your own faves! Seriously â€" pun overload.

If you wanna be my lover… you gotta get with my trends!

HTML email (weffashion.blogspot.com)

Over the past few seasons we’ve seen the rebirth of the body con, monochrome back in action, and crop tops cropping up everywhere, and now, the 90s revival is bigger than ever.

Street style gurus are transforming the once fashion faux pas into fashion statements. Jelly shoes, white platforms, cropped tees, they have it all, and so did we… once upon a time! So lets embrace our inner Viva Forever and get our 90s on… again!
River Island, 60e
Skinny sandals and big white platforms are back! We all remember clip clopping around in the teeny tiny stiletto heeled sandals and now the discomfort can grace our soles again. Platforms were always comfy and these chunky classics from Quiz will be perfect with a pair of 90s cropped levis!

Quiz in Debenhams, 40e
I don’t think we’re ready for this jelly…….
Jelly shoes! Even in the 90s I couldn’t bring myself to wear a pair! They’re not for me, but hey, if you can pull them off, then go get ‘em!
River Island, 25e

Penneys, 5e
The crop top…
Forever 21, 7.75e
A 90s classic, the crop top! The crop top almost deserves a post of its own, but for now, let me enforce that there ARE crop tops for all sizes, so you can keep your Me B dream intact no matter what size you are.
River Island, 25e

If you really aren’t comfortable in a crop top, this racer style black vest is very Posh Spice and is just as good value as it was in 1995.

Asos, 7e
The Scrunchie…..
“THAT’S MY SCRUNCHIE” a phrase heard in every household in the 90s, and now it’s back!
Oh look it’s my favourite colour… DENIM!
Forever 21, 12.75e
90s was the ultimate denim era. Cropped stone washed jeans paired with a baggy tee, will give you the perfect throwback vibe, without going full on b*witched, eeek.

BooHoo.com, Plus Range, 45e

So get ready to slam your body round and wind it all around this summer, but maybe we’ll leave the jelly shoes where they belong, back in the 90s!
